In most studies the occurrence of CDI was not assessed at all.[6] We are aware of only two prospective studies in which CDI was assessed in travelers with diarrhea. In this study, only travelers who had previously been treated with antibacterial agents and had persistent or recurrent diarrhea were included in this study, so cases of CDI among travelers without exposure to antibiotics, or travelers with acute diarrhea caused by C difficile may have been missed. Four of these patients were treated with ciprofloxacin with or without additional antibiotics, and two patients were treated with an unknown antibacterial agent during their trip.
